Grant Funding for August 2020 to June 2021
At Perpetual Guardian we have a fiduciary responsibility to act in the best interests of the Trusts that we manage in perpetuity, and to oversee the advancement of the original charitable intentions for Settlors and Trusts. We are at the start of a global economic recession due to the (as yet not fully known) economic impacts of COVID-19. Perpetual Guardian’s Philanthropy Fund is fluctuating due to market movements which have resulted in the funds under management reducing in value from 31 December 2019 to 31 March 2020. As investment markets continue to fluctuate, we cannot predict how this will affect the performance of the Perpetual Guardian Philanthropy Fund (and for how long) and, therefore, the amount of grant funding available.
At the same time, NZ communities are facing increasing demands for support, and so are the charities that support them. We have seen in the market that some of the highest community needs are mental health, building resilience for vulnerable communities, skills training to enable people to secure new employment and other community support.
Other philanthropic funders are taking a range of approaches but overall are indicating only a 4.6% drop in funding over the next 12 months. The majority of these funders are family, community or private philanthropists, so have very different considerations from a trust company such as Perpetual Guardian which has the obligation to act in perpetuity.
Given that we cannot predict how long the investment markets will fluctuate, Perpetual Guardian is taking a balanced and prudent approach to our grantmaking from August 2020 to 30 June 2021 to ensure that capital and income can rebuild so we can continue to support charities in need as per the Settlors intent, and for the medium to long term. This means that for grant seekers some of our available grant funding will decrease for the next 12 months to allow the capital in those trusts to rebuild. Rest assured that we are monitoring this ever-evolving situation and will continue to look to achieve as much benefit for New Zealand as we possibly can, given these constraints.
We will continue to publish on our website which grants are open for applications so please check this here.
